The nominations for the prestigious Spirit Awards, honouring independent filmmakers’ accomplishments, were announced this week. Two of our films, The Departure and Motherland, made the nominees’ list and will contend in the Best Documentary category. Winners will be announced in Santa Monica on 3 March.
Presented at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, The Departure is a touching and meditative portrait of a Japanese punk-rocker-turned-Buddhist-monk who inspires others to embrace life. The second documentary by award-winning director Lana Wilson (After Tiller), The Departure is a poetic and deeply moving film that contemplates death as a way of better understanding how we should live.
Sundance acquisition Motherland takes us into the heart of the planet’s busiest maternity hospital in one of the world’s poorest and most populous countries: The Philippines. Three women—Lea, Aira and Lerma—emerge to share their stories with other mothers, their families, doctors and social workers, in this intimate and engaging film by award-winning filmmaker Ramona Diaz.
