Record Price for Maurizio Cattelan’s sculpture

We recently acquired the new film Maurizio Catellan: Be Right Back by Maura Alexrod which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary portrays the career of a provocative and subversive artist, who has solidified his place in the contemporary art canon.

The artist recently made history when his sculpture entitled "Him" was sold at Christie’s auction for a record $17.2 million (£12 million), after just a few minutes of bidding. The piece is a wax and resine figure of a kneeling Hitler created by the Italian controversial artist and made a lot more over than the estimated amount since it was expected to make between $10 and $15 million. “Him” was created by the artist in 2001 and included in his retrospective at the Guggenheim five years ago.

Maurizio Cattelan is recognised for developing a satirical art. His most famous artwork is called La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour), a life- sized sculpture of Paul John Paul II after been hit by a meteorite. Catellan’s previous record was for a statue of himself peeping that it was sold for $7.9 million.
